Each of us practice resilience in a unique and personal way. For several months guests to this conference web site have
responded with what inspires resilience in them. Please take a moment to scroll down through their responses. Inspiration can
come from many sources indeed and clearly from the relationships those who work with young people in teams experience.
Thank you to our contributors here and may the conversation continue...
For many years, I was inspired by RV'ing throughout
North America. For one month, I was the boss of me,
going where I wanted to go, doing what I wanted to
do and all when I wanted to. It took a few years to
realize I was essentially going AWOL. Travel and
tourism was a great way to reaffirm for myself all the
good things  the youth in my care could enjoy when
they became healthy enough to build positive lives
for themselves.
Garth
Resilience for me was even if my life was not perfect
and I suffered some trauma in my youth that
I
turned this around and found the
strength to make something out of this
and be there for other youth that are suffering.
Being a child care worker is not easy, we read, see
and experience a lot of sad stories and damaged
youth but if I made it they can also.  One of my
teachers said that this job would be very hard
emotionally and that if I felt good about something I
did or a youth did to keep this as a pearl and connect
them in a strand around my neck so when times
really gets rough and I feel like I have lost hope to
hang on to these pearls and see that I can make a
difference.
Monique
What inspires me is when I have a student(s) that come
back to me after they graduate and have been working in
the field for a period.  They ask me questions about the
client(s)they are working with and are able to relate the
questions to the course work that was covered
throughout the program.  This tells me two things that
they were listening in class and that they received the
lifelong learning message that "they will have that many
questions after the program is finished as they did when
they started and during the program".
Neal
By the brilliance I see in the voice of children and
youth
. When we REALLY listen, it becomes obvious that
there is no difference in the value of what they have to
say and what we think we know!  THAT is inspirational all
on its own!
Leanne
Resilience for me is having the skill set to focus on
the lesson in each experience, whether it be a
negative or positive experience, not the outcome.
Then having the desire to try again armed with
better information instead of fear of failure.

I have recently moved to the Rocky Mountains
with my family I find myself being inspired by the
most simple things,
the views of the
mountains, the sunsets and sunrises
.
They seem to renew my spirit as I continue on
my professional journey, from Child and Youth
Care worker to private counselling practice and
Child Protection.  Through the discovery of a
connection to nature, I find myself
understanding how connections relate to
resilience:  With self, I find spiritual resilience in
being connected to nature; with at-risk children
we see the importance of connections with
others to foster resilience; and as professionals
I see the importance of connecting at
conferences like these ones - with other
professionals (either at the beginnings of their
career or at the end of it (or somewhere in the
middle))- to foster resilience and thus longevity
in workers across this vast landscape.

Through connections we find our sense of
belonging; through connections we find a
mentor to help develop mastery;  through
connections we discover independence as well
as interdependence;  through connections we
find moments to be generous.  Through
connections we find resilience.
Curtis
I find that the word inspire and resilience to be somewhat
oddly joined together. What inspires resiliency? My first
thought is that resilience is a base survival response to
keep us going in adversity. The next piece in the process
seems to be some level of thriving. The inspired part of
resilience comes later in the game. Possibly this our drive
to the actualized self when we are truly able to transform
adversity? This is a never ending life process....to me
those who stay in the game with what ever the cards of
adversity and capability they are dealt are inspiring!
Allen
The young people in the world who are able to
stand up against all the odds and make positive
changes in their lives when they have someone
to LISTEN!:despite the trauma and the abuse
they have suffered. And to all the CYW's like
myself  who have transformed their trauma and
life experiences into a gift to inspire other young
people to rise up and seek true happiness.

Alicia
When I hear a young teen mom say thank you
for your help
. If you weren't their for me I would
not be where I am today raising a healthy happy
child. Thanking me for always listening and never
judging. She was scared to think of where her life
would have went with out the help and support.
With these words what wouldn't inspire you!!!!!
Laura
How one is inspired by resilience, will first and foremost
require to have a clear personal definition of what
resilience means to him or her. To me,
resilience is
the ability to thrive in the face of challenge
and bounce back from adversity
. So how am I
inspired by resilience? Watching young toddlers and
preschoolers falls down, dusts themselves, gets up and
resumes their play. Observing how elementary children
with extra supported needs re-learn the same academic
concept over and over again until he or she reaches
mastery. Engaging with adolescents with addictions
willing to attend peer support groups, detox programs
and/or recovery centers, and benefiting from the
sessions. I am truly inspired by children and adolescents
who "gets back up after falling down". It takes bravery to
face any kinds of challenges and obstacles.
Elaine
What inspires resilience for me is the
everyday events in one's life
. The
seemingly simple things we all take for granted;
like wanting to getting out bed in the morning to
see what wonders the day holds or being able
to smile / laugh. I am amazed and inspired by
the children and youth that I have worked.
Somehow, someway they are able to do get out
of bed in the mornings, smile and laugh even
though they have experienced so much pain and
hardship in their young lives. They pull from the
"magic" within themselves to help them defeat
their Goliath and to help them on the rocky road
before them. Resiliency is magic within one's self
to over come obstacles that we could never
dream of getting over.
Melissa
Resiliency is inspired for me when loved ones or
just a 'someone' continues to believe in the
unique gifts and talents
that we have and they are
a constant support to remind us of how precious we are.
They inspire hopes of better tomorrows and stand beside
us as a reflective mirror to who they believe we can be.
Cathy
By the experience of love, caring and gratitude
in all its forms.
Thom
I wake up every morning keeping in mind that if I child
can do it no matter how bad the day it so can I wake up
every morning keeping in mind that if I child can do it no
matter how bad the day it so can I.
Janette
I am inspired by seeing the challenges and
adversities that others confront dail
y, often
using humour and maintaining their dignity.

I am inspired by people who - despite experiencing
intense psychological pain and contemplating ending
their lives - continue to make the choice to live. I am
inspired by their hope and longing for their situation
to change, and the courage they muster daily to
march on in search of relief. I am inspired by those
who share their pain and let others know they are
suicidal, even though they may be rejected or
dismissed by others as attention-seekers,
manipulators  I am also inspired by the carers who
take notice, who are willing to sit alongside, sharing in
the person's pain.
Patti
When I am reading the file of a youth I work with. Some
days I do not want to get out of bed, some days I think
this job is too stressful, and sometimes I think life is just
too hard. Then I go into work and grab the files of the kids
I work and read what they have overcome.
The
resilience that these kids have shows no
bounds
. They have overcome obstacles far greater then
most people can understand, and yet they still get out of
bed and they still live. When life gets hard I look to the
youth in care and see what resiliency truly is and that in
itself inspires me to find my own resilience and remember
that I can make it through anything the world throws at
me.
Tara
The little things inspire resilience for
me
. When people are able to help others in a small
way even though they are struggling to help
themselves. When others deal with such horrible
and bad circumstances either by their own choices or
by birth but still manage to get through the day. It
reminds me about this quote...
"Don't say you don't have enough time. You have
exactly the same number of hours per day that were
given to Helen Keller, Pasteur, Michaelangelo, Mother
Teresa, Leonardo da Vinci, Thomas Jefferson, and
Albert Einstein."

Resilience is inspired for me by the power that i see
in a group. A group of workers, a group of teens or
just a group of concerned and committed citizens.
Amanda
The drive to change the status of children and
youths.
Joshua
Seeing what HIV/AIDS is doing to African children
whom are orphaned by this Pandemic  makes me to
become an Activist/Missionary that they must have a
better place even after we leave this continent,
Thats is my resilience and this cause is what makes
me to wake up daily to keep going on.
Timothy
I am inspired simply by watching, supporting,
and being a part of the process of resiliency

in the lives of the children and youth I work with. They
work against all odds to cope with the adversities that
life throws at them, while teaching me not only how to
bounce back but how to keep on going!I am inspired
because my students teach me just as much as I teach
them. I am in awe of their potential and am inspired by
their success!
Aimee
I am inspired by passionate colleagues. Passion is
like a healthy virus that is highly contagious!
Rose Marie
By the strengths of some foster children. Peter
Inspired when music, art, drama, and dance moves,
connects, and inspirits resilience in myself and in
others.
Heather
It is simple... each day I am reminded of my own
resilience and capacity to grow
from the
challenges I face
when I witness the youth
in my program that seem to have so many risk
factors against them and yet despite these odds
they are so resilient; moving forward and
dealing with life's challenges head on with hope
and optimism.
Lisa
By the resistance of those pushed to conform. Kiaras
By the possibilities of each new day.  Every morning brings
opportunities to learn, grow, achieve, advocate for children
and youth, and enjoy the wonders of nature with friends,
family, and colleagues.
Donna
By the great amount of learning i take from my instructor (who
is also working in the CYCW field, and her passion for this field
and the work we as CYCW can do and passion for those she
works with is evident in her everyday) and through the Child
and Youth Care Worker with Addictions Support Program.
This field and practice inspires me more
everyday
. I had a strong passion for this field when i
entered the CYCW program and that passion has grown each
day. So much great work and learning and growth can come
from having supports in one's life and this has inspired me. I
am inspired when one can see past the pain they went
through, and see who they become because of that. It is not
the experiences that made them who they are or who they will
be, but how they dealt with and worked through what
happened to them that makes them who they are. I am
inspired by the CYC program and by the wonderful work that
current CYCW's are doing each and everyday in ! The field to
work with children and youth. I can not wait to be working
myself in this field, and to continue to be inspired each and
everyday by the wonderful children and youth I will come in
contact with and build trusting relationships with.
Bernice

By the beauty and wonder of the
children
I see who fight for their right to be
celebrated in the face of multitudes of voices
that tell them that they need to be 'fixed'.
Brenda
I am inspired by the workers I work with. They
go through a lot everyday, but they still are able to
get up everyday and come help children who have
more problems than they do. The workers have a lot
more struggles this year than they have the past few
years and they are handling it with as much positivity
as they can. They work hard everyday to make sure
these students have a positive day and they do a
great job.
Becky
What keeps me inspired are the success stories
I see from children/youth who have overcome
their daily struggles and past experiences. It
makes me feel empowered to help those who
need help in order for them to have inspiring
stories such as these. To advocate for those
who can not advocate for themselves is
empowering and one of the greatest feelings
I've experienced.
Nicole
When I was working in my summer placement I had observed
a staff member who had just finished working a double shift,
a client had come in crying Watching her take off her coat and
sit down with this client
for an extra half hour just to
make sure he was OK.
She was tired,and over worked
and that didn't matter to her. Resilience in its finest sense.
Leanne
What inspires me is the children  and youth I
work with on A daily basis. I would like to be a
positive role model for these children and
channel my resilience from within. Strength,
advocacy and the ability to help others is what I
believe to inspire resilience. I see people every
day put up with a number of challenges and
they have the strength to wake up every day
and continue. This is something that I admire.
Jessica
By the movement of youth that have been dealt a
bad hand and the strengths that they possess even
when growing up in such a tainted world. They are
the next generation of hope.
This isn't just a
job, it is our life.
Talia
Because in bad situations I try to think about the positive side
of it.
Erin
By my children. When I look at there faces I know
that no matter how bad things may seem that I will
be able to get through, to see them smile and laugh
again. I am also inspired by the fact that I know
there are people in the world who are suffering and
in way worst space then me and yet they still
manage to make it through their days with a smile on
there face.
Michelle
By my mom because she is an amazing woman
and has given me the best life possible. She has
given up everything for us kids and overcome a lot of
challenges to be where she is now.
Melissa
I am inspired when I see people who give
up their own time and money to help
people
who need it more. I would love to
travel to another country to help those who are
less fortunate. I will end up doing lots more
charity work in the future. I just admire those
who are so very selfless that they can do this on
a regular basis.
Kayla
I am inspired by watching my six year old ride her pony. She is
brave -
nothing scares her...and when she falls or the
pony bucks - she keeps on trying. She has inspired me to start
jumping my horse.
Rorie
I am inspired by the resilience of the families I
work with...the pain they deal with day in and
day out when through adoption they were just
trying to help a child...
their fortitude,
strength and compassion in the face
of so much testing
always humbles me.
They remind me that as humans we are meant
to be in relationships and that if we continue to
push forward creating those positive
relationships the world would be a better
place.
Stacey
I am inspired by the families that I work with.
The care and time they invest into learning how
their children grow and develop,
how they
work as best they can to be the best
parents they can be
in spite of the
challenges they come across. I'm inspired by
my co-workers who share the same passions
for the job we do within our program.
Genevieve
I am inspired by people, young and old, who
go out and make their dreams happen.
Amy
I am inspired by my students everyday. Jody
Through tormented winters that shoot freezing rain and heavy snow onto the gentle shoot of our eucalyptus tree, I watch, helpless, as it slowly
curls up and browns.  I sigh when Spring comes and I realize that the delicate and young eucalyptus tree that has been trying so desperately to
grow, has once again died down.  I fear that this time, it may not return to try again.  As seasons pass, the eucalyptus tree has still not returned
and we have since cut it down to the stump.  Just when I suspect that it is dead through to the roots, a new shoot appears.  Once again, the
eucalyptus tree is trying its luck on a growth spurt.  It is not waylaid by the many previous failed attempts.  This year, I have watched it grow tall
and strong and survive an extremely cold winter.  Nature reminds me that the Universe is my life line.  That, whether I like it or not, I am moving
forward, growing all the time.  I can fight it or surrender and go with the flow, accepting that resilience is built in.  It is part of our make-up.  Failing
is part of my growth and it makes for a heartier, stronger person.
Karina
I am inspired by the gathering of
people to a just cause, by those
of us who choose not to 'fight' for
a belief or a cause, but who seek
to increase understanding to
others will support the belief.
We
are all diplomats who embrace the
rights of fellow human beings. We see
similarities were others see
differences even while we embrace
our own individuality. I am inspired by
the ongoing commitment we all have
to better our communities in whatever
way we define community! Thank you
everyone for being such great
inspirations!
Cindy
As a Child and Youth Worker I am inspired by the children and youth I work with when
I think of practicing resilience. Youth who despite their circumstances and past
histories have chosen the direction they want to go in life and that direction is going
somewhere positive instead of self destructive. I also feel that having a strong
support system has an effect on inspiring resiliency. This is one of my favourite quotes
and it is quite fitting in this context.
