Side Trip

While folks were in Vienna, Frank Delano threw out the suggestion that a party could visit Budapest on a day visit. The party soon formed and met at 6:30 a.m. to take the high speed rail. This page follows that journey and one of the most iconic and appreciated cities in the world.

Buda

Buda is on the west side of the Danube, Pest on the east. Together they form Budapest.

Pest

The capital of Hungary has to be the most elaborate of any in the world.

Travel

It was an early morning departure with breakfast taken on the train. High speed rail does not exist in Canada so it was quite a thrill to whip across farmland at speeds unknown to a driver. The further thrill was to arrive at a train station designed by Gustave Eiffel, the engineer who built an iconic tower, a statue in New York habour among other things. The use of steel in construction allowed for walls or roofs of glass allowing more light into a space. Like many the party soon jumped on a Big Red Bus, almost an iconic institution on the EU.

The eagle abound in Hapsburg country.

Hungary was once part of the Hapsburg Empire.

hopping on, hopping off

A perfect day with clear skies and blazing sun and tourists on the move everywhere. Between the train ride and overview a small square with a outdoor patio was just the ticket. Wonderful lunches, refreshing potables and appreciation for the day followed. There was a short walk to the Parliament on the shore of the Danube.

The guard

The Hungarians are thrifty when it comes to the military. A handful of officers guard the Parliament building, two standing at a time. Not anywhere near the fuss in London.

parliament square, the 1956 revolution and the Holocaust

Shoes on the Danube Promenade

As you stool along you come to these shoes but soon realize they are each detailed bronze sculptures, a 2005 memorial to Jews killed here towards the end of the war.

stunning and profound

I have toured many Holocaust memorials but never anything moving as this. The story of persons removing their shoes before being shot and their bodies falling in the river is visually made fresh. People are in prayer and speak in a hush. Flowers and stones are left.

A few steps up and you move from history's horrors to one of the premier travel experience of our time.

You almost can hear the Masterpiece theater theme music seeing Viking Cruises. Passengers on tour , taking the leave, arriving to board.

A place to rest a moment, out on the river

An evening cruise with champagne.

A city of almost 2 million comes down to a fishing hole

How wonderful, to be able to bike over to the river and take a few casts.

The Parliament of Hungary

Every country wants to have a snappy capital but Budapest may just take the cake with this marvelous mashup of cultural styles.

french mansard, roman dome, gothic spikes,

The blend of styles with an overall Venetian atmosphere. You expect a princess not legislators.

simply grand

a sunset cruise with champagne was a great way to wrap up
