Round Hill

Turn off the highway and explore a section or two, the local town and its antique store.

There was indeed a hill around which a small town, several farms, fields, ponds and lakes spread out. The purpose of this site is to display these and the life they support to argue the value of taking break from the long drive across Saskatchewan and eastern Alberta which can impress as a lot of the same old, same old.

The prairies are one of the major bread baskets that feed the world. Farming has grown from a single-family lifestyle to a multi-family corporate entity featuring computer, gps guided equipment and farm sited grain storage.

Familiar feilds

Cattle, horses, sheep endless fields of hay rounds and grain storage in waterproof, field-based bags inflated by the grain they shelter.

Modern combines use gps co-ordinates and computers to cut crops. The result can be whole sections turned into works of art with contrasting cuts. parallel patterns and even wave designs.

Prairie sentinals

Aging structures

The prairie wears its history in the decaying out buildings, fences, homes, barns and shacks that have lost their purpose.

Elevator

Once, often clustered together along the rail lines, grain elevators were the sentinels of the prairies. This was a rare one in private hands prolonging its decay. Most are gone now, replaced by huge grain centers with their concrete towers. Many farms boost their own grain bins, now larger and in clusters in the yard. Grain can sit encased in waterproof fabric right on the fields. This allows the farmer to time when the grain goes to market on price.

In decay

These were the largest structures in their day as are their modern centralized counterparts in ours. Sadly, the man made aspect of each piece of timber, glass or shingle testify. If you ever spot one, go over and get close enough to appreciate its size.

The snowgeese have arrived from the artic.

The prairies invite you to explore whatever is over that hill.
